PAST LIVES
This movie is so… wistful. I think that’s the right word.
The movie follows childhood friends Nora and Hae Sung, who are separated when Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea to the United States. Years later, they reconnect — first online and then in person.
Watching it evoked such feelings of longing and distance and memory and fate for me. I like the way the film confuses and complicates what I’ve come to expect in a storyline like this one. It made me think about the life I might have had — not in some thwarted love story sort of way — but in the way of continuing to choose the life I’ve already got.
Have you seen it? Did you like it as much as I did? Talk to me!
If you haven’t seen it, it’s available on Netflix. Rated PG-13. Rotten Tomatoes: 95%
